Laser VS optical mouse?

With an optical mouse with a red led the led usually illuminates the whole mouse inside and some of this light escapes the mouse as diffuse light from the ons and the scroll wheel. Is this the same with a laser mouse? Or is the light only focused at the bottom and no other invisible light can escape the mouse except from the bottom and not from the ons and scroll wheel?
